Need updating advice ...

Postby Wolf » Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:23 pm

Hey guys - I have a site that I need to get updated and I always get confused when there are a few updates I need to do at once.

The site is currently phpBB 3.0.4 and running SP RC1 (0.4.1), and I need to update it to the latest phpBB3 version (3.0.7, I guess?), as well as the latest SP release (I'm assuming that is 1.0.5?).

I think for the phpBB3 update, I just need to upload the changed files from 3.0.4 to 3.0.7(since the automatic update package keeps giving me a 500 internal server error). What about updating SP? Is there a particular modx instruction sheet in the 1.0.5 zip file that I should use? And since I have the RC1 installed already, do I need to remove the SP edits that are already coded in from my last installation, or do the instructions for updating overwrite those?

Thanks...

First make sure you have a full database backup... Then do one just selecting the portal tables...

You must first update phpBB to 3.0.6 but better 3.0.7PL1... other wise the portal may not work...
Install AutoMod (the latest version also copies the UMIL file to your site)...

Next I would run the portal/remove_portal.php code in your browser...
Manually delete all stargate files using your FTP, in particular includes/acp/acp_k_*.* and includes/acp/info/acp_k_*.*
At least one of the old file will cause problems as we do not overwrite it... the rest should be safe....

If you get this far, upload the latest portal and use AutoMod to install... Browse to your_site/portal to finish the install... that should be it...

Back up updating your site to the latest phpBB... when do you get the error?

PS just noticed you are using 1.0.5... so overwriting files may be sufficient... even if you get a minor error it can be fixed quite easily...

Bear with me, Mike (you alaways do anyway...lol)

Here's what has happened so far:

When I tried to run the automatic update package from 3.0.4 to 3.0.7, it appeared to update the database just fine. But when it came time to do the file check, it would crash every time I got to "108 files out of 327". I went on to the phpBB3 support forums and saw others with the same problem. One recommendation was to remove the .htaccess files from the update package. However, when i did that, I would get a general error message stating that the install files were incomplete.

Per your advice (more or less), I tried to run the automatic update from 3.0.4 to 3.0.6. I got a message saying that my version was already current at 3.0.6 (???). So I tried to continue with the file check and it said my update files didn't match my version. I'm not sure how that's even possible, since I didn't make it through the file check stage. (I sthis maybe because the database was updated? Because I had not made any file edits or anything.)

So then I tried to run the automatic update package fro 3.0.6 to 3.0.7PL1, since my ACP was telling me my current version was 3.0.6. At this point it said my database was current, but then when I proceeded to file check, it got up to 108 of 327 files again. Instead of getting the 500 error this time I got this:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method diff3::get_num_conflicts() in /home/content/blah/html/forums/install/install_update.php on line 1519

(feel free to delete that line after reading if it contains sensitive info)

So that's where I am so far.... :doh:

Here is what you can do...

Download all your files (will take a while) into a new folder... example: C:mysite See Note '1
Copy the install/update/new folder from the 3.0.x to 3.0.7x folder to... for example: C:\updates

Assume windows... goto C drive....
Click on C:\mysite and then C:\updates folders... (you need to hold down the Ctrl key but I guess you know that ;)) to highlight both...

Right click on either of the highlighted folders and from the popup menu select Winmerge...

It will open with the two folders.... Click on each file in turn and view the difference...
Update all files... Once you complete all files upload to your site...

The db version is probably updated so you wont need any more work...

If you don't have winmerge grab it for the net... you should see something like this:
2010-03-09_062448.png (52.26 KiB) Viewed 298 times

If you have any problems doing this... you can download all your files and zip them up and PM a link... I will do the updating for you... :n1:

Note #1... You don't need to download the cache, files or store folders...

Yeah, see that's what I figured - I hadn't uploaded new files or done any edits yet. Brain's a little scrambled from stuff going on in the real world at the moment. :D lol

Mike - I have pretty much everything looking good at this point.

One thing, though - the portal blocks are not showing on my forum index page. I know I've known the answer/solution to this in the past, but it escapes me at the moment.

In the index.php file do you have:
Code: Select all
if(STARGATE)
{
   $user->add_lang('portal/portal');
   include_once($phpbb_root_path . 'includes/sgp_functions.'. $phpEx );
   include_once($phpbb_root_path . 'includes/portal_blocks.' . $phpEx);
}
Changes a little depending on portal version...

Yup, that's there.

Just for a little more information that could help, I'm using the PS3 style for 3.0.6 that I downloaded from Stargate Styles. Could there be something missing in the style edits that I should look for?

Also regarding the blocks - even though they are not showing on my forums index, they are all showing on my portal page. However, the following blocks are empty - links, recent topics (narrow), and birthday.

Post a picture of the index page... it will give me an idea as to what is missing...
Might be a code update or a simple style fix... depends on the portal version installed...

307-001 is in flux as I have recently added some nice updates to reduce sql queries and generally increase the portal functionality.

I assume you mean a picture of the code. Or do you want a screenshot of the actual index page?
