An overview of the Stargate Portal ACP

A quick overview of the Stargate Portal ACP

An overview of the Stargate Portal ACP

Postby Mike » Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:15 pm

Every aspect of the portal's functionality and how it interacts with your phpBB installation can be configured via the ACP > Portal tab...

Features:
  • The portal can be enabled/disabled in the ACP:
The administrator can disable the portal without effecting the normal operation of the site...
Whenever possible we employed a code switch (if(STARGATE)) to the core phpBB edits to facilitate the disable option...
On occasion where it was not practical to employ the switch, remaining portal code has no effects on the phpBB core code...
  • Blocks: (Admin Options)
You can add, delete, edit all blocks.
    You can enable/disable block individually.
You can move block around setting the default layout (currently, left, right or center columns).
You can create additional block for any purpose.
    Block data is cached.
Blocks can be visible to one or more groups.
Block contents can be displayed as static data (default) or scrolled data (WC3 compatible scrolling).
  • Blocks: (User Options)
Members can organise and arrange block to suit, they can be moved, hidden and unhidden as required.
  • Menus: (Admin Options)
You can add, edit, delete and move a selected menus and its options...
Menus and their individual options can be made visible to one or more groups...
Each menu options can be assigned an image...
  • Portal Web Pages: (Admin Options)
The portal support the creation of simple html web pages.
You can add, edit and delete these as appropriate...
Web pages can share common headers and footers...
  • Portal Wrapper: (Admin Options)
You can wrap code inside the portal page...
  • Portal Tools and build in Mods: (Admin Options)
    • Acronyms
      ...
    • News Feeds
      ...
    • Referrals
      ...
    • Quotes
      ...
Breakdown of each section in detail:
  1. Configure Portal Defaults (below).
  2. Blocks
  3. Menus
  4. Mini Modules
  5. Web pages
  6. Portal Wrapper
  7. Tools and Additional core mods
  8. Cloud Mod
  9. File Backup
  10. SGP Youtube Mod

Main Config Page (Configure Portal Defaults):
You can view/edit the basic setting from the ACP PORTAL tab, these setting include...
Portal Version: The current installed portal version...
Left and Right block widths: Default (180px)...
Enable Blocks: Default (checked)... You can disable all blocks from here...
The next two entries are for further development and are not currently used..

Footnotes:
The portal has undergone a lot of changes and updates over the years, it was the first ever mod written for phpBB3, not to mention the original portal... In all that time our primary objectives have not changed... 1) *To implement a portal without altering the phpBB core code, 2) Only add tried and tested functionality to the portal core and 3) Support all code including styles (porting them if necessary)...

We also add a few enhancements to one or two existing phpBB ACP tabs...

*As mentioned earlier, we employ a switch to lessen the effect of edits on the phpBB core, as a testament to this we can disable the portal... This separation from the phpBB core is not complete, in future releases we will be adding addition code separation with an aim to completely remove edits form the actual phpBB core code... There are no tricks involved in this process, just simple logic...
